Our
Philosophy
We
Believe…
~ Birth is a normal, natural
event, and that a woman’s body is usually quite capable of giving birth with
minimal interventions if everyone is patient enough to let the process happen on
its own timeline, assuming all is well with mother and baby.
~ The woman’s partner is very
important during the birth experience. He should be able to participate at the
level which he feels most comfortable with.
~ A woman knows her own
limits when it comes to how much pain she can endure, and that only she should
decide whether she should use pain medications or not. We fully support a woman
in her choice to birth either without pain medications or with them.
~ Breastfeeding is best for
both mother and baby, and will encourage our clients to try to breastfeed. We
also realize that for some women, breastfeeding is not desired, and we will
support her in her choices.
~ A woman’s birth experience
will be something that she will remember for the rest of her life; therefore it
should be a positive experience. We will do everything we can to ensure this is
possible. Even when unexpected things happen during birth, if a woman feels like
she has had choices and been in control of the situation, she is more likely to
feel positively about the birth. Our goal is to help women feel empowered by
their birth experiences.
~ A woman needs to know all
of her options in order to truly give informed consent. Without knowing your
options, you have no choices.
~ Every woman deserves doula
support with someone she is comfortable with. A woman should choose her doulas
based on the level of comfort she feels with them. If a woman is uncomfortable
with her doula, it will affect her feelings about the birth for years to come.
If you do not feel comfortable with us, we can refer you to one of our backup
doulas.
~ Relaxation is one of the
most important techniques for handling labour pain. We strive to maintain a
calm, peaceful, and relaxed environment from the moment you first meet us.
~ Clients deserve privacy,
and we will not disclose identifying details to anyone without prior consent.
~ Everyone should be treated
fairly and equally, regardless of age, race, religious beliefs, culture, social
or economic status, physical or mental disabilities, sexual orientation, and
marital status.
~ Continuing education is
important for doulas to stay current with trends in the birth environment. As
doulas we are committed to learning as much as we can about all aspects of
pregnancy and birth. We continue to study pregnancy and birth, as well as
attend relevant trainings.
